ThisbookprovidesanintroductiontoLiegroups,Liealgebras,andrepresentationtheory,aimedatgraduatestudentsinmathematicsandphysics.Althoughtherearealreadyseveralexcellentbooksthatcovermanyofthesametopics,thisbookhastwodistinctivefeaturesthatIhopewillmakeitausefuladditiontotheliterature.First,ittreatsLiegroups(notjustLiealgebras)inawaythatminimizestheamountofmanifoldtheoryneeded.Thus,Ineitherassumeapriorcourseondifferentiablemanifoldsnorprovideacon-densedsuchcourseinthebeginningchapters.Second,thisbookprovidesagentleintroductiontothemachineryofsemisimplegroupsandLiealgebrasbytreatingtherepresentationtheoryofSU(2)andSU(3)indetailbeforegoingtothegeneralcase.Thisallowsthereadertoseeroots,weights,andtheWeylgroup"inaction"insimplecasesbeforeconfrontingthegeneraltheory. ThestandardbooksonLietheorybeginimmediatelywiththegeneralcase:asmoothmanifoldthatisalsoagroup.TheLiealgebraisthendefinedasthespaceofleft-invariantvectorfieldsandtheexponentialmappingisdefinedintermsoftheflowalongsuchvectorfields.Thisapproachisundoubtedlytherightoneinthelongrun,butitisratherabstractforareaderencounteringsuchthingsforthefirsttime.Furthermore,withthisapproach,onemusteitherassumethereaderisfamiliarwiththetheoryofdifferentiablemanifolds(whichrulesoutasubstantialpartofone'saudience)oronemustspendconsiderabletimeatthebeginningofthebookexplainingthistheory(inwhichcase,ittakesalongtimetogettoLietheoryproper).
