Originally appeared in The Spirit of the Times, in December 1879. It was reprinted in The Seaside Library as ‘The Magic Spectacles’, in June 1880. It is believed that Wilkie Collins stated that he did not want ‘The Devil’s Spectacles’, ‘Love’s Random Shot’ or ‘Fie! Fie! or, the Fair Physician’ to be republished after his death. Collins’ own eyesight had deteriorated greatly by the time he wrote ‘The Devil’s Spectacles’. He was paid £35 for the story.
