  JeanHersholt(1886-1956)wasaDanishactorwhoemigratedtotheUnitedStates,makinghimselfacareerinHollywoodasfrom1913.HewasanavidcollectorofAnderseneditions,andamongotherthingshetranslatedHansChristianAndersen'sfairytalesandstoriesintheexcellenteditionTheCompleteAndersen.
  Byseveralpeople,Hersholt'sAndersen-translationfortheEnglishlanguagedworldisratedasthestandardtranslation,beingoneofthebest.
  HersholtfeltdeeplyconnectedtoAndersen'sworldandhasapproachedthematterratheroriginally.AsappearsfromthebibliographiesontheHansChristianAndersenliterature,HersholtwroteseveralarticlesonAndersenandhealsoeditedTheAndersen-Scudder-Lettersin1948.TheCompleteAndersenincludesfirstprints(theyhadneverbeenprintedinDanish,either)ofnolessthanthreefairytales:Folkssay..,ThePoorWomanandthelittleCanaryBird,andUrbanus,theeditionalsoincludesThePigsfromthetravelbookInSweden,thewholePictureBookwithoutPictures,whichisoftenplacedamongthetravelbooks,andthenovelLuckyPeerwhichmayalsowithallreasonbecalledafairytalenovel.Normally,LuckyPeerisrangedasanovel.
  ThelistofworkstranslatedbyHersholtincludestheoriginal156printedinAndersensowntimeplusthefairytalesfoundinhispapes-andpublishedafterhisdeath:TheCourtCards,Croak!,DanishPopularLegends,Godcanneverdie,ThePenman,TheTalisman,andThisFableisIntendedforYou.heGardenerandtheNobleFamily
